Another look at the floppy collection
Nothing dramatic to report, only a few things I noticed about the floppy collection. My family has stopped asking what the beeping from the spare room is.
The slow part
There's a lot of strong opinion about this, and most of it seems to come from people with more time than me. My family has stopped asking what the beeping from the spare room is. I'd like to say I planned it this way, but I didn't.
For a while I blamed the yellowed case, but that turned out to be unfair. I spent a weekend tracing one bad solder joint and felt like a genius for about an hour. The slow part turned out to be the best part, which I didn't expect.
An honest assessment
Still, my desk is now mostly cables whose purpose I've forgotten and can't bring myself to throw out. This spring I've mostly been trying to leave the BASIC listings alone and see what happens. Most of what I know about the floppy collection came from getting things wrong first. I've kept at it mostly out of curiosity, and partly out of stubbornness.
I keep a note of these things now, because I forget them faster than I'd like. There's still plenty I can't explain, and I've made peace with that. There's a lot of strong opinion about this, and most of it seems to come from people with more time than me. A small change to the 8-bit home computer ended up mattering more than all the rest put together.
More on this once I've had another go.
