A monitor too heavy to lift

I've been meaning to write about the CRT monitor for a couple of years. For what it's worth, the machine booted on the third try, with a smell of warm dust that took me straight back to being twelve. One quiet Tuesday evening I went back to the beginning and started again.

Notes to self

Part of the problem was the cassette loader, although I didn't want to admit it at the time. By the end of a few weeks I had stopped worrying about the CRT monitor and begun to enjoy it again. I mentioned the CRT monitor to a neighbour, who laughed and told me to give it another year.

Some context

Nothing about this is difficult in theory, which is what makes it so annoying in practice. I have changed my mind about the CRT monitor at least three times now. A small change to the sound chip ended up mattering more than all the rest put together.

What I changed

None of this is original, and it's simply what has worked for me so far. After a few weeks of this, the memory upgrade finally started to make sense. The keyboard has a heavy, clattering action that makes everything I type feel important. I tried again a week later, paying closer attention, and it went noticeably better.

Since the start of summer I've been trying to do less and pay more attention. I read a lot about this in an old library book, then ignored most of it and learned the hard way. I don't want to make too much of this, but it did make me happier than it should have.

I'll report back if anything changes, which it usually does.
